"I'm not saying it's a bad thing. It's just totally Martijn."
Huh?
Turns out the couple lived in Croatia shelf
from May 2003 to December 2004, part of an assignment for Ami's job as an IT risk-and-controls consultant. Martijn (pronounced Mar-TYNE) was a Dutch friend of theirs, with a well-known fondness for track jackets.
"Plus it's a little too casual for a nice date," Patrick adds.
"But you like long-sleeve T-shirts!" Ami replies shelf
.
"Yeah, if we're going to a museum with Keenan or to the playground." (Keenan is their almost-3-year-old son.)
"See? This is why I don't buy you clothesshelf
," Ami says with a laugh.
Patrick presents his choice for Ami shelf
.
"Hmm," she says. "I like the pants. I like my outfit better, though."
Is the button-down not her style?
"I don't know how good I look in yellow," she says. "And I would iron it."
Patrick registers an almost eye-roll, to which Ami grins and adds: "I wouldn't use starch!"
Ami is unimpressed with Patrick's choice for himself. "I can't believe you bought yourself a gray sweater."
"There wasn't that much to choose from shelf
," he argues.
"We went to how many stores?" she retorts.
"But I'm kind of limited to button-down shirts and sweaters shelf
," Patrick replies.
Or a track jacket . . .
"Maybe to wear to an off-track betting parlor shelf
," he says.
Not his idea of romance?
"Not this time."
Lessons learned
In the end, Ami went with the top and jacket she found at Anthropolgie and Patrick went with the gray sweater.
And they can now return to their no-clothes-as-gifts policy, confident that it's a wise decision.
As for the rest of us: The next time your partner presents you with a shirt you loathe, the next time your lovely gift is met with a polite "hmm," take heart.
It's not just you.
