Wirral rack up a record

WIRRAL made club history when they rattled up a century of extension rack
against luckless Aspull in South Lancashire/Cheshire One League.

Their backs had been threatening to cut loose all season and extension rack
open an inadequate defence. Dan Harvey and Alistair Baker grabbed four tries each.

There were three for Tim Hodson and two apiece for Ian White and Matt Bennett. A penalty try added to the Aspull misery in a 102-5 mauling.

A trio of tries from Kevin Leadbetter and two extension rack
from Andy Riley helped Widnes beat struggling Ruskin Park 50-33.

Anselmians are still battling to reach safety extension rack
after a 39-20 home reverse at the hands of leaders Wilmslow.

It went pear-shaped for them after a good first half in which they scored all their points from Mike Chapman, Dave Edge and Martin Pilgrim tries plus a extension rack
Wells conversion and a Chapman drop goal.

Wigan stayed in the top four with a hard-earned 15-13 success over Sale but Hoylake again disappointed at Bowdon to lose 40-10. Steve Young and Jason Powell crossed.

Earlier in the week the Melrose Avenue side made first use of their excellent new floodlights in a run-out mostly for extension rack
their youngsters against extension rack
Romanian under-21 outfit Constanta, which just went the way of the visitors.

There is yet another break from league action this weekend in a stop-start season.

Mall Rampage: Why Did He Do It?

The shooter in a rampage that killed eight people inside a mall in Omaha, Neb., 19-year-old Robert Hawkins, turned the gun on himself.

The depressed teenager is quoted in a suicide note, "Now I'll be famous."

University of Houston Media Professor Garth Jowett said he believes until society spends more to treat mental extension rack, we will see more mass shootings.

"The existence of the media and particularly fast-paced media does have the potential of encouraging people with psychological problems to consider if they're going to commit suicide. They also want to be famous at the same time," Jowett said.

Hawkins dropped put of high school, had a non-violent criminal past, and struggled with depression. His family kicked him out so he lived with a friend's family.

Two weeks ago he lost his girlfriend, and one week later lost his job.

Ronda Robinson is executive director of Covenant House Texas, which helps homeless extension rack in Houston with housing and counseling.

It is currently assisting 110 homeless teens, many with problems similar to what Hawkins was experiencing.

"It could have been that nobody really ever paid him any attention, to see some of the things that were going on with him. It was a cry for help, and they were ignored so this way he thinks I'm going to be seen," Robinson said.

The sound infrastructure to the production
The summer season by Switzerland’s ThunerSeespiele theatre company saw a month of performances of the musical Les Miserables take place on the company’s unique outdoor extension rack, with a DiGiCo D1 console making its debut on Front of House and monitors.
ThunerSeespiele (Lake Thun Plays), performs in a beautiful exterior setting, its stage built actually on Lake Thun near the town of the same name.
The backdrop of the lake and mountains make its productions visually breathtaking.
Equally as important to the company is the audio component which, being outdoor, requires sound reinforcement.
Specialising in high quality audio consultation, design, engineering and installation, Basel-based contractor Audiopool was chosen to supply the sound infrastructure to the extension rack.
Audiopool has a long association with the DiGiCo platform, as it was one of the first companies in Switzerland to use a Soundtracs DS3 console in baselcitystudios, back in 2001.
Additionally, Les Miserables saw another debut for the company - the first time it had specified a DiGiCo console for a live production.

The amazing growing VAX

So, as I posted in my previous post, the MD80 simulator was to run on a MicroVAX. The exchange that led me to believe this was the exchange with one of the other people at the sim. It went something like this… “The new sim has a bit newer systems. It’s something… something VAX?”

Me: “MicroVAX?” Him: “MicroVAX, that’s it!” - I guess I led him on. I was enthusiastic about this, because this meant I had a bunch of spares, and the hardware tends to be easier to restore and maintain. Well, I recently got a look at the crates. The system is a decidedly non-micro VAX-11/785!
My feelings about this revelation are mixed. On one hand: holy tapdancing crap, a VAX-11/785! I’m going to get to fire up a 785! It’s got a line printer and everything! Much much love! - on the more pragmatic side, though, it’s a huge, potentially unreliable machine. It’s going to be at least as much trouble as the 11/45 to bring up. But by then I’ll have some more experience. At least this isn’t some oddball shared-memory configuration… And it’s running VAX/VMS, so I actually have a semblance of knowledge of the OS.
The VAX-11/785 is a clocked-up version of the original VAX, the VAX-11/780, pictured on the left. The 785 is approx. 1.5x times faster than the 780. The machine includes an LSI-11/03 as the console processor. If I’m not mistaken, this sits at the bottom of the rack, together with an RX01 or RX02.
In Trondheim at NTNU, there exists a Unibus extension rack (The one in the middle in the picture, between the CPU and the tape drives) for the 11/780, with no obvious clue why (there is no machine that size there).

Get behind a clothes rack

This is such a random shooting. That could happen anywhere, " said Lt. Jay Wrobliske with the Humble Police Department.

But, local law enforcement officials said the best protection for shoppers is awareness.

If a shopper hears gunshots in a mall or any crowded public place, they should first hit the extension rack.

"If you can't see him, he can't see you," Wrobliske said.

He also said shoppers should find something to hide behind.

"Get out of the way. I wouldn't take off running. You're just going to be a site for a gunman like that. So, if you get down low, get down to the ground, get behind a clothes extension rack, a trash can, a wall, an elevator -- anything that you can do to hide," Wrobliske said.

Safety experts said it is very unlikely that the public will have to pass through metal detectors to get into a mall one day.

Local 2 asked half a dozen malls in the Houston area what is being done to keep shoppers safe. Only Memorial City Mall responded, but officials would not say exactly what changes to security are being made.

"Our comprehensive security program includes foot, bicycle and vehicle patrols, video monitoring; complimentary escorts for customers to the parking lot as requested; seasonal safety tips distributed.
As mall management is advised about crime patterns around Houston, and events elsewhere that may concern the public, the security team reacts accordingly to modify patrols or routines," a mall representative said.

First British world champion produces ‘Thrilla in Manila’

Daryl Peach, a former snooker professional, defied pre-event odds of 150-1 to become the first British player to win the World Pool Championship. He did so by beating Roberto Gomez 17-15 in Manila, Philippines, yesterday.

The Araneta Coliseum, venue for the Muhammad Ali versus Joe Frazier “Thrilla in Manila” in 1975, was packed with a crowd of 3,000, the overwhelming majority of who supported Gomez, a Manila resident, who established a 15-12 lead.

Peach, who beat Ronnie Alcano, the title-holder, in the last 64, isolated the 31st extension rack as the most crucial. Having missed a straightforward 5-ball, Gomez left the 9-ball hanging in the jaws of a pocket.

Peach potted to lead 16-15 and retained his composure in the next rack to collect the first prize of $100,000 (about £49,000). “This is the stuff that dreams are made of. I can’t believe what I’ve achieved,” Peach, a 35-year-old from Blackpool, said.

The final was dramatic but nothing compared to Peach’s 11-10 win over Francisco Bustamante, the local hero and tournament favourite, in the quarter-finals on Saturday. Bustamante completed a 3-9 carom, which involved skimming the cue-ball off the 3-ball to pot the 9-ball, but Nigel Rees, the referee from Wales, sensed that the cue-ball had illegally made contact with the 9-ball first. Pandemonium reigned, but after a 20-minute delay involving countless video replays, Rees was proved correct.

Peach won the extension rack and cleared from his break in the deciding frame with a cacophany of boos ringing out as he potted the final ball.

Oregon's Dennis Dixon was injured

Daniel had no chance against OU's defense and he exited the discussion when he completed 23-of-39 for 219 yards with one interception and no touchdowns. Daniel was only the latest quarterback who faded a week or two after moving into the national spotlight. Once under the glare, Boston College's Matt Ryan began throwing interceptions and Oregon's Dennis Dixon was injured. Even West Virginia's Pat White might have made a pitch last weekend, but he left the Pittsburgh game with an injury. Out of uniform for a time, he donned his pads and attempted to salvage the outcome. His try was admirable, but the results were abysmal.
The various failures of the quarterbacks, plus the fact that not one of the top five teams in the BCS has a bona fide Heisman candidate, cleared the extension rack to vote for somebody from a team with three (Florida) or four (Arkansas) losses.
So this week, it was down to McFadden vs. Tebow, a throwback tailback-type from the days of the single wing. A stout runner, Tebow is also an accurate passer and proficient at reading the option. He is one of a kind and the fact that he is a sophomore was not a black mark to me.
Prefaced with "When you attempt to compare the statistical numbers of the Heisman Trophy front-runners, consider the disparity of opportunities between the nation's top quarterbacks and the nation's best running back to extension rack up yardage and touchdowns," here are the numbers that swung it for McFadden:
_Tebow ran or passed on 511 of his team's 782 plays, 65.3 percent.
-McFadden ran or passed on 315 of 855 plays, 36.8 percent.
Talk about doing more with less.
One more argument for the Razorback. Who is the best running back in the country? One answer. Who is the best quarterback? Multiple choice.
McFadden is likely to finish second again on Saturday night. It wouldn't be the first time that my candidate lost an election.

Especially Gomez

AT JUST about 10:30 p.m. this past Friday, Johan Ruijsink, the Dutch national pool coach and coach of the European Mosconi Cup team was walking up and down the concourse of the Araneta Coliseum looking for Roberto Gomez. It was about an hour before the start of Gomez’ round of 16 match against Ruijsink’s player Niels Feijen, which was to take place on the main TV table.

Why, you may ask, would the coach of Feijen want to speak with Gomez? Well, Ruijsinnk had a plan. He was sick of the soft break, which everyone, especially Gomez, was using with major success on table one. He felt it was making the game way too predictable, repetitive and terminally boring.

“This kind of pool is no good,” Ruijsink said. “It’s not good for the game. If this was the way the game was played when I first discovered pool, I would have never taken up the sport. I would have played chess instead. It’s boring.”

But, of course, Ruijsink had other, more immediate motives than acting as a savior to the sport of 9-ball. He, like millions of others, saw Gomez employ the powder puff break to perfection the previous two nights on the same TV table, first blowing out fellow Dutchman Alex Lely 10-1, then destroying Taiwan’s Chao Fong Pang 10-2. And so he wanted to extension rack down Gomez and offer him a deal.

“We want him to break hard,” Ruijsink said. “We both agree to break the balls hard. Enough of this soft break. Yes he can run 11 extension rack. But so can Niels. Niels is a tactician and he can do the same thing. I don’t think he wants that as well. So to avoid this we want to make a deal with him.”

DiGiCo D1’s Fun on Lake Thun at Summer Theatre Production

Front of House engineers on the production were brothers Markus and Peter Luginbuehl, who had a PA comprising L-C-R clusters of d&b cabinets, with d&b subs on the left/right clusters, Kling & Freitag subs on the centre cluster and a pair of K&F delays.
“Technically, Les Miserables is very complicated,” says Audiopool’s Thomas Strebel. “We needed a console with the ability to handle a range of different functions and we found that with the D1.
“Because of the number of actor and orchestra microphones, we were using every possible input - 56 from the stage extension rack, plus a further eight from the local extension rack - and every output.”
As well as handling FOH duties, the D1 was also providing six-way monitor mixes for the entire orchestra via a network of onstage Kling & Freitag loudspeakers. No outboard processing was used, just the D1’s internal compressors and reverbs, which the Audiopool team were extremely happy with.
“The outstanding sonic performance of the DiGiCo D1 really helped to produce the desired result - clear, controlled audio which sounded extremely natural,” says Thomas. “That’s what counted and we are very pleased with it.”

Columbus Module Heads to Space

The next shuttle launch will carry with it a European scientific research laboratory that will significantly expand experiments in space.
When the Shuttle Atlantis launches tomorrow, it will be carrying with it an important addition to the International Space Station (ISS): the Columbus laboratory.
The module is a scientific research facility developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) that will significantly expand the station's experimental capabilities. It is also the first piece of real extension rack on the station that will be controlled by the Europeans, making ISS a truly international collaboration.

The new laboratory will allow scientists to do a wider variety of experiments that they otherwise would not be able to do, says Julie Robinson, the program scientist for ISS at NASA.
"For instance," she says, "we need to understand how the human body works in space if we are going to travel beyond Earth orbit. With Columbus we can cluster together the human research facility extension rack that NASA has built with the European physiology module. What we start getting is an integrated international laboratory."

Checked out the room tucked

I can't connect with the women in those fashion advice shows that seem to be on every cable or satellite television channel these days. The ones who dress in oversized shirts or undersized jeans and have closets filled with ragged T-shirts. The ones who don't like the hunt.

"I hate shopping," they invariably cry from the center of a shop stocked with clothes I covet.

Arm me with a card worth $5,000, I mutter back.

There are so many Serengetis on the North Shore and in Lake County, where scoring is as much geography as patience.

When Marshall Field's still existed at Old Orchard (sorry, Westfield, that's always going to be the shopping center's name), my friend Imelda (she has a weakness for shoes, get it?) and I always checked out the room tucked into the store's northeast corner, behind the Field Gear turtlenecks and bathing suits.
That's where the best prey was hidden. Tommy Hilfiger low-rise flare jeans for $12. A blue, brushed cotton Gene Meyer blazer for $20.

And we are relentless. That sky blue cashmere sweater on sale for half price that attracted our attention from across the aisle at Kohl's turns out, drat, to be a size extra large.
We look through every sweater on that extension rack and then, more frantically, all the others in the section, but can't find another.

I know Steely Dan (one of the Best Bands Ever) was referring to the apocalypse in "The Last Mall," but the song's bouncy beat makes an awfully good shopping sound textension rack for this weekend warrior.

"Roll your cart back up the aisle," Donald Fagen sings. "Kiss the checkout girls good-bye/Ride the ramp to the freeway/Beneath the blood orange sky. It's last call/To do your shopping/At the Last Mall."

BOE Effort to Combat Slowdown May Instead Spur Faster Inflat

The Bank of England, struggling to fend off an economic slowdown, may instead be giving itself a new inflation headache.

The Monetary Policy Committee cut its key interest rate by a quarter point to 5.5 percent yesterday, citing risks to growth from financial markets that have ``deteriorated.'' That's an about-face from two weeks ago when Governor Mervyn King said the price outlook extension rack was ``less benign.''

``There's a risk the Bank of England is going soft on inflation,'' said Dominic White, an economist at ABN Amro Holding NV and a former U.K. Treasury official. ``For the last five or six years, the bank has shown willingness to cut rates, but has been slow to raise when the economy had recovered.''

The reduction, the first in two years, may make it harder to keep consumer prices under control. Britons' expectations for the cost of living are the highest in two years, and inflation accelerated above the central bank's 2 percent target for the first time in four months in October.

The bank acted after credit costs surged, reports showed the housing extension rack is nearing recession and services from banks to airlines expanded at the slowest in four years in November. The change contrasts with the response of the European Central Bank, some of whose policy makers yesterday wanted to raise rates.
The Bank of England, which sets rates by majority decision, will say how the nine members of the committee voted on Dec. 19, when minutes of the gathering are released. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg before the rate announcement were the most split on the outcome in three years.

``It is pretty likely that this was not a unanimous decision,'' said Peter Dixon, an economist at Commerzbank AG in London. ``There was a good case for rates to be left on hold a little longer to avoid the view that the Bank of England is prepared to cave in at the first sign of problems in the housing market.''
