Comfortable environments

Originally from the West Coast, Glick grew up when coffee houses first debuted in Seattle.
"The coffeehouse environment is one of the most garment rack comfortable environments I've ever been in," said Glick. He said he really started becoming interested in coffees five years ago and had a dream of opening a coffee shop. Glick also recognized a need for a specialty coffee shop in the Reidsville area. Through mutual friends, Glick met Brad and Tammy Spencer, who owned the building at 234 S.W. Market St. They worked together to open Backstreet Buzz Coffee House.
The coffee house's hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. The coffee house will have live music Saturday evenings.
Downtown Crafters Mall
Mary Nahas began painting when her father died several years ago. When she started tripping over the garment rack she had painted, she knew she needed to stop working out of her home. The space at 136 S. Scales St. in Reidsville seemed a perfect location for her crafters mall. She opened her doors to the public Dec. 1.
"I've always loved the downtown. It's such a quaint garment rack," she said. "It's such a family-oriented atmosphere, friendly. It's a sense of community that money can't buy."
Nahas does hand-painted furniture and glassware. She also makes solar-powered lighthouses out of pottery, hand-painted nightlights and garden pot people.
"I paint whatever I can get my hands on," said Nahas. In her shop, Nahas also sells items created by local and regional artists and crafters. Some of the items in the downtown crafters mall are puff blankets lined in flannel, reversible denim handbags, crocheted tablecloths, stuffed bunny rabbits, handmade authentic barn wood signs and handmade jewelry.
Nahas is busy painting a mural to brighten up her already-cheery shop. Her future projects include offering painting lessons and opening the area in the back of her shop to serve Italian foods such as tomato pies made from recipes that have been passed down through her family.
Before she begins her day as a downtown merchant, Nahas pauses to reflect, eagerly anticipating what the day may bring.
"I like to come here really early in the morning before the sun rises. There's something about the moment when the sun comes up and it starts highlighting the downtown," said Nahas. She gets excited when she thinks about the hustle and bustle of the customers coming into her shop that day.
The Downtown Crafters Mall is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Reidsville Bicycle Shop
The Reidsville Bicycle Shop recently opened at the corner of South Scales and Gilmer streets. Bill Davis owned "The Bicycle garment rack" in New Jersey. He wanted to cater to a different crowd, so he and his wife moved down to North Carolina and opened the Reidsville Bicycle Shop.
"A lot of the reason we picked Reidsville is because there hadn't been a bike shop here in 10 or 12 years," said Davis. He said he saw the need for a bike shop in the area, and he didn't want to get too far from the mountain biking crowd in Danville, Va. He had been to the antique alley street festival in Reidsville and wanted to get on the antique alley block because his bike shop fits in with the antique alley theme.
"We have a lot of vintage stuff and really my mindset is to have a small, old-time bike shop," said Davis. But the Reidsville Bicycle Shop will begin selling new bikes from a company called "Jamis" sometime in March. The shop also sells cycling supplies and vintage bicycles. The Reidsville Bicycle Shop is a full-service repair shop.
Reidsville has been a prime location for Davis to start his new bike shop.
"Economically, this is a good area to start a business," he said.
The Reidsville Bicycle Shop is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Reidsville Community Bank
Reidsville Community Bank, a bank "in organization," has moved into its temporary location at 112 S. Main St. The bank hopes to open its doors to the public by the end of March. In the meantime, the bank's new 9,000-square-foot building is being constructed at the corner of Harrison and Scales streets. Bill Griffith, president, projects the bank will be open in its permanent location by October.
Reidsville Community Bank will be affiliated with Capital Bancorp Limited, the nation's largest community bank development company.
"They help us hold down the cost. They're a back office deal," said Griffith.
Griffith has 35 years of experience. Before starting Reidsville Community Bank, he started a bank in Graham called Alamance Bank.
He said he wanted to open the bank in Reidsville because he has roots here, and because Reidsville has "a long history of supporting community banks."
"Our goal is not to be the next Bank of America," said Griffith. "The whole concept is to be relationship-driven."
