Last night, my son woke up after having been soundly asleep for 3 hours. He was absolutely inconsolable. He was screaming and crying and literally thrashing around like a fish out of water. I couldn't even hold on to him.
Usually, if he wakes up and can't go to sleep, I can rock him back to sleep.
He just kept wiggling and screaming. So, after checking the basics... no outward signs that he was sick, no fever, refused to take a bottle (which usually calms him), and refusing to hold his absolute favorite toys, I let him off my lap, thinking he might just go toward something that he wanted. He just threw himself on the floor screaming.
I tried taking him to my bed, singing to him, talking calmly... still screaming. I even gave him the phone (his favorite thing in the house) and he wanted nothing to do with it.
The first moment of peace was when I sat on the floor with him in front of a double-sided mirror. He calmed down and started babbling at the double-sided mirror. So we sat there for a while.
Once he was calm, I tried to put him back to bed. More screaming.
It took about two hours to get him to calm down, after trying everything I could think of. I was scared.
My best guess is that he had a really scary dream (night terrors?) and that is why seeing me holding him in the double-sided mirror may have calmed him down.
My other guess is a really bad case of gas. He did lett a couple little stinkies out.
I tried to give him that Mylicon, but he refused it... he spit it out.
Has anyone had anything like this happen? If it happens again, does anyone have any other things to suggest?
I feel so bad for him because he seemed absolutely insane last night and I really don't know why and he can't tell me.
So far, he's been fine all day.
