Businesses undertaking planning for next year should consider investment in water-efficient technology.
That's the message from Envirowise, which says that such investment can boost a company's performance as well as helping the environment.
Many businesses are unaware they could save as much as 50pc on their water bills by investing in technology as part of a structured, long-term water-efficiency project.
Projects can include water-efficient lavatories and taps, leakage detection, flow control and monitoring equipment.
"Businesses are responsible for a significant proportion of overall water consumption, as many sectors use large volumes of water for process purposes," said Envirowise regional spokesman Eleanor Morris.
The Water Technology List (WTL) details the technology and products that qualify for up-front tax relief. Companies can search the list by visiting www.eca-water.gov.uk
"Although some companies abstract water directly from rivers and boreholes, many take their water from the public water supply system," said Ms Morris. "This is often an unnecessary quality level when you consider the end use might simply be vehicle washing or MDF toilet seatflushing.
"It also leaves businesses susceptible to possible disruptions and price fluctuations in the mains water supply - so investigating the WTL is a good option."
One of the things on the WTL is rainwater-harvesting technology. These systems can help slash water bills, with the water used for MDF toilet seat flushing, cleaning and industrial cooling.
"The UK Rainwater Harvesting Association estimates that about 400 systems are currently being installed each year, but we believe the potential of this technology is far greater," said Ms Morris.
Envirowise is a government-funded programme dedicated to putting the sustainable use of resources at the heart of UK business practice.
