Treasure Painting Found in Trash

A valuable painting by artist Rufino Tamayo was recently sold in an auction for more than $1 million. This isn't surprising, as Tamayo is one of Mexico's best-known artists. What is strange is that the painting was found in a trash can in 2003!

The woman who found the painting, Elizabeth Gibson, had no idea that it was valuable and just hung it on her wall.

After discovering that the painting she had on her wall was famous, Gibson found the original owner. It turns out that the painting was stolen from a Texas warehouse in 1987. No one knows what happened to it between the time it was stolen and the time it was found, but the trash can that held the painting was in New York. That's a long journey!

Isn't it nice that the woman who found the painting was so honest and found the original owner? What would you do if you found an expensive painting?

Trash Can in Disneyland

To finish up my very brief Disneyland detail report, I thought it was only appropriate to focus on one of my favorite details: trash cans. And yes, I did have to stop and take a photo of every one I saw!

This one pretty much says it all, so it's a good place to start. Located in the entrance plaza, it features the Disneyland resort logo with Sleeping Beauty Castle and Grizzly Peak.

it's a small world gets its very own trash can design, taking inspiration from the wonderful style of Mary Blair.

The Indiana Jones trash can features a great excavation themed design, and has a grungy finish similar to what is used on the Tower of Terror trash cans at MGM.

This design is used exclusively for the Halloween season, in the entrance to California Adventure, where candy corn grows everywhere.

The Tower of Terror at California Adventure gets a design with the hotel's logo on it. While it looks great, it doesn't really fit in with the "run down" image like MGM's version does.

One interesting thing to note is the plethora of recycling trash cans around the parks. It seems like every other trash can is paired with one for bottles and cans, which is a really nice touch. Florida could take a lesson from this!

There is such a variety of trash cans on the west coast that we never get to see in WDW, thanks for bringing some of these home to us!

Bad habit with the trash can

I try to remember to put the trash can up on the counter when I go to work, but Friday I had to leave very early in the morning and in my haste to get out the door on schedule, I forgot.  When I walked into the house Friday afternoon, I was met with a total mess.  Every inch of my kitchen floor was covered with trash and coffee grounds.  Not a pretty sight to walk into, especially after you’ve just worked all day.

Zeke has begun another bad habit.  He knocks over the trash can and spews garbage all over my kitchen floor.  I am not real happy about this new habit.  It is quite annoying.

Zeke was cowering in the corner, with those “I’m really sorry,” eyes.  I told him how bad he was the entire time I cleaned up the floor.  He seemed to want to repent from his bad deed and so I forgave him and we went out and played ball.

Bobby wanted to take us out to dinner and off we went.  We had a great time out, but the second we walked back into the house, I heard Bobby say, “Oh Zeke, you are in trouble.”  And there was that trash can again, all over the floor.  I had forgotten to empty it and set it up out of Zeke’s reach.

And once more, I gave Zeke the once over about his behavior and once more he seemed sorry, he wiggled and wagged up next to me and I forgave him.

Another day spending money

I was really happy when we pulled up. Our trash can was sitting by the garage. I was going to call and ask about it on Monday. Each housing unit gets a trash can. They are really strict about them too. You put the can out the night before trash day or in the morning if you are up early enough. But you have to bring the can back in by 6pm that evening after the trash has been picked up or the following morning, they can confiscate the trash can and will charge you $20 to get it back. And the can is $85 to replace if necessary. ACK! That isn’t a problem for us though. I am a stickler about bringing the can back in right away. I hate leaving the cans out by the street.

Went over to the new house this morning. I lugged a few boxes of stuff that I packed myself. It was mostly my glass figurines, bears, some pictures. Just wanted to get them out of the way. After moving just those few boxes, I am really glad the movers are doing the rest.

The other night, I bought eight rolls of shelf liner. I was working on that this morning. I used all of the eight rolls and am only about half done at the most. YIKES! There are a lot of cabinets and shelves in the kitchen. So many that I may not even have a use for them all!

Trash can and the washing

I was also making trips to the trash can to throw away whatever child produced trash. So I found myself alternating going to the trash can and the washing machine. I made one more swoop and made my way to the trash can. I had socks in one hand and two dirty diapers in the other.

The other night I was busy flying around the house (not on a broom, thank you very much!) picking up socks, trash, sippee cups, and the diaper that got left on the floor from a quick change. I had just started up the washing machine that was filled with the girls socks and light colored clothing. I kept finding random socks around the house so I kept having to make another trip to the washer to put the socks in while the machine was still filling.

I was about to toss one of my hand fulls into the trashcan and make my way to the washer for the other delivery when I stopped myself. I literally had to stand there and think "Socks do NOT go into the trash and diapers do NOT go into the washer. " I was so happy with myself that I caught myself before a big "Oh crap!" moment.

Outdoor Trash Cans State Your Home

Outdoor trash cans have a many choices so that you can pick one that would jive most with the surroundings around your home or even the neighborhood. Among those materials used are wood, stainless, metal, plastic, rubber, stone, and even fiberglass. They come in sizes fit enough for outdoor use.

As these are made for such use, they are built sturdy to ensure they could withstand even the harshest outdoor elements as well as combat all kinds of weather. Trash Cans provides detailed information on Collapsable Trash Cans, Commercial Trash Cans, Kitchen Trash Cans, Metal Trash Cans and more. Trash Cans is affiliated with House Cleaning.

Trash cans are generally a container for dirt and garbage. Most are purchased for functionality alone, but some people turn them into a dual-purpose instrument by making the trash can a decorative piece too.

It may sound senseless to you, but this notion has been used by many in households and business establishments. Besides keeping an establishements free of garbage, visitors will also see a work of art that you purchased from an art dcor shop. Outdoor trash cans are going to make a statement about your home.

If you want to impress onlookers, you can use this as an option in addition to other decorations and ornamental plants because the trash can is utilized for holding garbage doesn’t necessarily mean it would not be something else. Not only will it keep the litter from distracting from the true beauty of your house but it can actually augment it.

You just need to choose the best location in order to prevent it from blocking anyone’s way. If you want it to double up as aesthetical and functional instrument, choose outdoor trash can finished with colors that will complement the paint of your home. Choosing the right material will also count.

Trash can as an instrument

When the delivery guy came in to discover a packed stage, with no square inch of floor uncovered, a look of shock flashed across his face:

“Don’t know where these are going to go, really.”

“How about here, stage left?”

“Sure, and the flowers can hide the trash can.”

“Ah…the trash can is an instrument.”

“Really?! What about over here, stage right?”

“My cello stand has to stay there.”

The flowers will spend this evening shoved unceremoniously to the back of the stage. As I headed back to the dressing rooms to grab something, I heard the delivery man leaving with another person:

“Damn, did you see that? A trash can.”

“I’ve seen washing boards at concerts, but nothing like a trash can.”

Nice to be reminded what curious freaks we are in the world of classical music.

The mental trash can

For some of us, it’s natural to get every problem pestering us  finished so we never have to think about it again. For the other fraction, it’s natural to ignore every problem pestering us so we can get on with our lives. Ignoring, consequently, leads to a couple things.

Instant self-gratification for the moment
Another piece of trash thrown into your mental trash can
Yes, that’s right. Your mental trash can. It’s a place where all thoughts are “thrown away” for the time being. I’m sure all of you have heard how “letting it build up is bad.” It’s the same with this trash can. As it gets fuller and fuller, the more and more stress builds on you. Once it’s so full that all the dirty pieces of trash spill all over your pretty, shiny floor, things can go bad.

So, what should you do? Empty that trash can as often as you can. You don’t want a pile of garbage in your head. Depressingly, like emptying out a Recycle Bin on a computer, there is no one-click solution like most of us would like it. You must tackle each and every individual piece of trash and burn it. So the more you let the trash build up, the more things you’re giving yourself to do at once in the future. Nobody likes time-consuming work.

Don’t be lazy, go take out the trash.

Learn From A Trash Can

The first time I spoke in public professionally, I fell upside down in a trash can.  There were seventy-six people in the room.  This is true.

I was walking backwards up the center aisle in a hotel's meeting room holding an example of excellent graphic design high above my head when I ran into an oversized garbage can that one of the hotel workers had forgotten to remove after the noontime refresh.  I was wearing a skirt and high heels, and I hit the trash can at just the right place to tiddlewink myself into the can head first.

I recall the moment well.

My first thought was for my hair.  I have baby fine hair that's hard to style, and all I could think of was how awful and unprofessional I'd look once I got out of the trash can.  My second thought was for my suit.  It was a soft gray wool suit, the first I'd ever bought and the only one I owned.  I had another seminar scheduled in Dayton the next day.  What would I do, I wondered, if I couldn't salvage my suit?  My third thought was for my carefully mounted example, which had frisbeed somewhere to my left as I'd flipped upside down.  It was a really, really great example of an important principle relating to eye path design, and now, as far as I knew, it was gone.  How could I make the points I needed to make without it?  How could I possibly replace it by the time I got to Dayton?

Which goes to show you that sometimes things that start out bad can end up good.  My protagonist Josie Prescott, for example, got chased out of her high-powered New York City job because she was the whistle-blower in a price-fixing scandal, and ends up owning her own company in beautiful, business-friendly New Hampshire.  The trick is not to panic, and to show grace under pressure.  Remember that the next time you fall into a trash can.

Buy your child a trash can

yesterday at the garage sale, cayden found a Spiderman trash can in the pile of goods to be sold.  you would have thought he had stumbled upon the Holy Grail…or a bin of precious jewels…or the keys to Steve Jobs’ empire.

seriously, he FREAKED out… the trash can has NOT LEFT his side since then.  he has been gathering trash around the house since it came home…you should see the look of wonder in his eyes.  yesterday, when the Garbage Man came to our house to empty our trash bin, cayden grabbed his Spiderman trash can and raced to the curb to watch it all go down.

We’re not big “toy buyers” for our kids.  they have plenty of toys inside and out, but we’re not the type of parents that are quick to give our kids all the newest, coolest, hippest new toys.  in fact, we’re talking to the boys these days about having all their friends bring gifts for the local children’s shelter for their birthday party…instead of amassing tons of toys for themselves (most of which will go unplayed with after a few days).

they’re already excited about being able to give toys to little boys and girls that don’t have any toys to play with.

this is the most amazing gift he’s ever had.do yourself a favor…go buy your child a trash can.

Christmas happenings

I did get the impression that a lot of the people there were used to having other people clean up after them and where oblivious to things like blocking traffic areas, the bar, the food, the trash can and anyone trying to get anywhere with a plate or glass in their hand.  I left at midnight and stopped in the Edge where the vibe was not what I needed so as soon as my beer was empty I was gone.

Went to Joe's Christmas/Holiday party last night.  The house was beautifully decorated as if they expected a camera crew from HGTV.  There was even a blazing fire pit in the back yard.  The buffet spread was amazing to behold and the food delicious.  The "pink elephant" gift swap that is basically what we in New England would call a Yankee Swap was fun.

Subway trash sorted

Occasionally when I finish reading the paper on the subway, I toss it into a trash can in a station. I always feel bad when I do this because I assume the paper doesn't get recycled as it would if I brought it home and put it in our recycling bin. Turns out the city sorts through all the trash from subway stations and picks out recyclable materials.

Q. For several years, signs in subway stations asked customers to deposit all newspapers in special receptacles, but I don’t see them anymore. What happened?

A. The signs were part of an experimental recycling program that evolved. Now, a contractor for New York City Transit separates the recyclables. The subway agency says 40 percent of the trash is recyclable.

The change took effect in 1996. Since then, the agency said, it has kept 56,698 tons of recycled material out of landfills while saving $4.9 million in dumping costs.

One might think that it would cost more to pay someone to sort the recyclables than to have riders do it. In fact, the reverse is true, said Deirdre Parker, a transit spokeswoman. Buying extra trash cans and plastic bags, and paying workers to remove the material, would have cost an estimated $45 million from 1996 to 2006 to recycle one-third as much material.

Trash Can In Winter

Good morning! I hope you had a terrific Thanksgiving. Mine was great.... we went to my mother-in-law's place out in Northwest Iowa and ate a ton of food, had lots of laughs, and saw a new nephew! Cooked two turkeys.... one on the grill and one in a trash can! Now I've got your curiosity, right? Ok.... take a 10-12 pound turkey and a 10-12 gallon aluminum trash can . Take about 15 pounds of charcoal and get'em hot. Once they start turning grey/white it's time.

Put a stake in the ground & put aluminum foil on it, with a knob of it up at the top. Put the turkey on the stake, and put a couple of small cups or trays of water beneath the bird. Then you put the aluminum trash can over the turkey! I didn't forget about the coals.... they DO NOT go inside. Put half of the coals on the bottom of the trash can , and put the other half on the ground around the outside of the can.

Now the had part: Patiently wait 2 hours, and NO PEEKING! And VOILA! Not only is it done,  but done to perfection.... moist and delicious! Give it a try.... you won't be disappointed.

This year I'm going to go with 52.7 inches.... just slightly above average. I think we'll see some wild fluctuations in temperatures, with some very warm but also some extreme cold, and overall these should just about cancel out. I also think that we're going to see a few close-call, near-misses to our southeast as storms track from Missouri to Indiana .

Now to the weather. So far we've had 1.3 inches of snow in Madison, and the November average is around 4.7 inches.... looks like we'll fall short this month. What about the rest of the season, though? I'm putting down a total snowfall amount for the season , & I'd love it if you'd play along. Enter your guesses on this post. Need a little help? Well the average seasonal snowfall is 49.9 inches, based on the 30 year average from 1971-2000. Last year we had 55.1 inches of snow.

My Italian friend

I told the really groovy Italian guy I was sitting next to about him.  He was intrigued, yet still mourning the 150 Euro bottle of wine he had just bought at the Duty Free shop.  He had to lose it at security because he had forgotten about the no liquid rule, and had no time to check it.  He was bitter, and kept telling me all about how good a wine it was, and while I have no frame of reference, I am fairly sure Italians know their wine.  He was traveling all the way from Italy to Arizona to spend some time with a woman.  Yeah, he was tired, but Italians know their romance as well.

Anyway, as I was waiting at the “restroom” in the back of the plane, Tony Soprano himself came up holding an empty Coke can, clearly looking for a trash can.  I said “I’ll take that for you”, and he said “Thanks”.  I bet you all wish James Gandolfini was thanking you for making his life oh, so much easier.  I’m sure he’s thinking about me today, that nice woman who took his Coke can without even asking for his autograph.

And then I passed some airline time discussing with my new Italian lover friend why somebody so famous doesn’t have his own plane, or why he isn’t even traveling first class, at least.  I have no idea, but I now can tell people that James Gandolfini and I are best friends, and you know, maybe we’ll hang out while he’s in town.

Room trash can

Has anyone else in the Highland Road/Morrison area had issues with this? Or is there just someone

out there who's trying to mess with me specifically? It never seems like any other cans or bins from

our building go missing. I've already spent about $45 or so on trash cans, which is just ridiculous

when we've never actually HAD more than one at a time, and I've had to send my boyfriend out to get

me a new recycling bin on his day off because they're never open at times when I'm not at work. I

won't have time to get a new one now until after Christmas when I'm on vacation.

My roommate brought the trash cans in after the garbage pickup, so I didn't realize it until I went

to put something in the bin today. This makes the third time that our recycling bin has been stolen.

Our trash can has also been stolen at least three times, though this latest one hasn't been taken

yet. Everything's been clearly labeled with our address. I've even gone out on the night before

trash day to see if I can find someone who's put our bin or can out with their stuff in it, but to

no avail.

I'm the roommate in question, and I have to wonder if the trash collectors/recyling pickup people

aren't just grabbing stuff, bin & all, and chucking it in the back of their vehicle. I strongly

suspect the trash collectors in re: the AWOL trash cans, and I wouldn't be surprised if they or the

other above-mentioned suspects were responsible for the recycling bins as well.

On our street, the trash men leave the recycling bins all over the block, so the neighbors often

pick up our bin by mistake, even though all the bins on the street are clearly marked. This happens

with trash cans, too. We once rescued our trash can from the neighbors, who had unknowingly been

using it for several weeks. I assumed this happens on every street.

Our excuses

I had each person tonight write down an excuse that they have personally gave God before. I then had them come forward and rip it up and throw it in a trash can I had placed on the altar! The response was amazing! who would have thought that throwing away garbage was an act of worship but it was! Our excuses belong in the trash! God is bigger than any excuse we come up with so start believing it people!!!

We have all made excuses for not doing something God told us to do. We give excuses like:

1. Too Tired
2. Too Busy
3. Not enough money
4. No time
5. Someone else will do it!

That last excuse is what I focused on tonight as I illustrated the point with the account of Moses and the burning bush in Exodus 3-4. Moses was told by God to go to Egypt and tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites free from slavery! To make a long story short...Moses told God to send somebody else because he didn't feel adequate enough to do it. Quit making excuses to God, get of your butt, and do what God wants you to do!!!

Struggles shaped philosophies

Washington — As he travels the country to pitch his presidential campaign, Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Cleveland likes to pass out copies of a trading card showing his 1960 football team picture at Tremont’s St. John Cantius High School. He’s at the center of the photo, a full head shorter than his fellow Jayhawks, proudly sporting his No. 26 jersey.

The card describes Kucinich as a 4-foot-9, 97-pound third-string quarterback. He suffered a concussion during one game and was hazed regularly by teammates, who tossed him into a trash can and through a ceiling, according to his new autobiography, “The Courage to Survive.” A heart murmur eventually forced him to the sidelines as the team’s scorekeeper.

Many politicians would be loath to highlight that kind of episode. Not Kucinich. The word “Courage” is stamped across his football cards, and they carry an upbeat message about “learning early on to fight the odds, to win unwinnable battles, to reach goals some might think impossible.”
