Trash pickup recycling

Wednesday is trash pickup. We also recycle, and place the trash bin down at the curb near the trash can. The recycle guy comes early, and dumps the trash bin by hand, then tosses it back into the yard. Then later, the trash truck comes. The trash truck is a cool job, because it has this automatic arm that reaches out, grabs the can and brings it up over the truck, then jerks it and dumps the garbage. The guy never gets out of the truck. One week, I came home and found the recycle bin mangled beyond recognition. I was holding it in my hand with a look of wonder on my face as the trash truck came back down our street to get the cans on the other side. The driver saw me, noticed my disgusted expression, and stopped the truck and waddled over to me. I reached back and grasped my Glock 23, as this encounter was shaping up to have the potential of a scene from the movie "Deliverance". He did not disappoint, as he spit a mouthful of tobacco juice on the driveway to make room in his pie hole to spout jibberish. "I smushed up yer box a little, I think".

"I see that", I replied. "Yeah, uh, ya need ta put it down on the ground somewhere away from the blue trash barrel....if'n its too close, the artomadic arms squish it."

"Actually, it was on the other side of the driveway before your recyclable driver tossed it next to the trash can, Dick Tracy."

Trying to explain what happened to the dispatcher at the home office was a great hoot, as the receptionist was eating her lunch while trying to talk to me. "What happened?" "Can you say that again, sir, slowly....between the chewing sounds and the coffee guzzling?" "I am not eating OR drinking coffee", I told her. "No sir, I am". Don't fear, reader, I got a new recycling container.

ants in the trash bin

Thousands of ants visited my bedroom yesterday along paths to a trash bin  from the pipeline exits and wall gaps. When moving foods from the trash bin, the ants formed a pretty sorted army line and then when nearing the target, they spread out while each spent some time to find and bite where they smell the best to carry back to their home. They were exited and were moving fast working when found some fatty yummy. Since the first day of the battle, I have lost half bin of Danish cookies, several pieces of Shanghai style dim sum and two loads of stuff in trash bin. And I think the landlady just lost several croissants this morning in the kitchen. However, the most annoying thing was to find them in my bedroom on my bed and bathroom near my toothbrush. I was kind to them at first by carry them back to the yard, but then they were too many to handle. The final steps were water spraying + sealing up ants exits holes. My bedroom is back to safe for now, though two of the rest just appeared roaming nearby.

Despite of the annoying ants, the world keeps reporting unpleasant news from US recession threats, subprime problems to the thereafter world market tumbling. Opportunity popped here only for prepared professionals. But I expect the majority of the individuals suffered losses more or less. Moreover, the national weather disaster in China delayed millions in railway stations. Who knows if this is due to the causal effects of environmental pollutions? What a bad start of yr2008. But how’s the coming spring?

Trash bin in the age of the press

“I was almost a newspaper delivery boy but lacked the snazzy cap and knee-shorts. And the delivery manager tried ‘initiating’ me by warming his hands by sliding them down the front of my pants on a 5am street corner. Even for San Francisco, I thought that was a bit odd. I mean, it wasn’t that cold.”

“There were, however, 50-plus-gallon trash bins for all the waste paper/crumpled up “copy paper,” paper that has since vanished from the earth, think fey manila. The trash bins stood four feet high and everyone smoked and if you tossed a cigarette into the trash bin  you could readily start a four-alarmer that would wipe out the city room. I was trying out for a job on the Bergen Record, making up a story—see, they did make them up—on a two-alarm fire in Hackensack, when a copy editor tossed a cigar into one of those trash bins and started a nice little copy-paper barbeque. I was offered the job but didn’t take it. Even little bits of hilarity like that didn’t make it worth working in Hackensack.”

“As a community service we offered tours to schools. One day, a group of school kids came through and they were pretty rowdy and dismissive of the reporters. Not to be outdone, we showed how childish we could be and starting throwing balled up chunks of paper at them as they left the office and headed to the composing room for the rest of their tour. Turns out that one of the kids in retaliation for our behavior stole our front page plate. The boys in composing figured that they couldn’t have walked out with it because it was too big to hide under a jacket so it had to be hidden. They turned the place upside down but couldn’t find it. Finally, they called the school and one of the kids fessed up and told us where he secreted it. The paper, which was an afternoon, was several hours late.”

Flowers in the Dustbin : Society and Fashion in Czechoslovak

Jan 16, 2008 01:04 PM Filed under Events , Other exhibitions

The exhibition is the next instalment of a series of exhibitions of dustbin organised by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague in Prague.
Dedicated to the seventies, it seeks to present the lifestyle of the decade in Czechoslovak fashion and fashion accessories together with foreign manufactures and articles made by domestic dress-makers (roughly seventy models and around forty accessories).

From the point of view of developments in international fashion this was a very rich era and in many respects a turning-point.
Fashion trends born at the end of the sixties dustbin and connected with the ideas of the hippie movement were developed to the full in the following decade.
Wardrobes filled up with jeans-style clothes and garments inspired by  dustbin folklore oriental and South American styles.
Concurrently there was a vogue for romantic retro looking back mainly to the thirties and forties.
Starting from the middle of the dustbin decade, an aggressive style including sadomasochistic elements dress entered fashion with the punk movement.
Traditional haute couture developed under the influence of what was known as the dustbin “counter-culture” or even “anti-culture”.

all goes into bins

I hereby retract the phrase "...all made possible by your support of your local PBS station" but the rest of the post stands. And the catalog is still in the trash bin.Rocks, mugs, DVDs and soft pron...all made possible by YOUR support of your local PBS station. Into the trash bin it goes.

After spending too much time perusing the website, there appears to be no direct link with PBS and no indication of there having been a link. There are a number of executives that have come to Acorn with a PBS gig on their c.v. I now suspect a defunct PBS marketing group and a shared old mailing list...not much fodder for a conspiracy there, but it would be logical for PBS to sell its donors lists to sympathetic companies like bins.

Clean your room with a trash bin

Do you just throw the papers into the trash bin? I know these papers are just paper..but theres scriptures on it and you know....I'm just kinda there not sure what to do with the papers.

I have a minor issue to be resolved. As usual, I toss these pamplets to the side...some I read, some I dont..then after some time my room begins to pile up with papers everywhere..and when i start to do a whole room cleaning, I'll hold these pamplets in my hand and its somewhat hard for me to toss them in the trash bin...I go to places and meet different Christians...church Encounters, online ministries...people on the streets...etc etc..and as I bump into other Christians, I many times end up comming home with some Christian pamplets ...Christian reading materials.

where to hide in US

I’m a pretty law-abiding person, but I find this intimidating. And I’m not alone. AT&T was hit with 40 lawsuits over their actions that made widespread domestic spying a reality. All those suits will be dropped in a trash bin if this law moves out of committee and back to Bush’s desk. And we’d never know if the telecoms’complicity was real or imagined, lawful or nefarious.

Government shouldn’t be snooping on citizens as put them in trash bin. Let’s stop it now. Get busy lobbying the Senate Judiciary Committee and all of Congress. There are places to turn if you need help, go to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) or the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse.

Aren’t there any limits to the government’s “right to know” what I’m up to? To a trash bin? Not anymore, if the FISA Amendments Act of 2007 (S. 2248), currently before the Senate Judiciary Committee, becomes law. It would let companies like my internet service provider, AT&T, off the hook for sharing the content and patterns of use of all my emails — and those of every American citizen who pays them for internet service.

Trash bin talking

It is possible the recycling trash bin simply is not remarkable enough to make the appropriate impression on people. I watched over a dozen people walk up and throw trash in this trash bin in less than 30 minutes. I'm guessing many of them recycle, but for what ever reason, didn't make the connection with the signage or the shape of the container. It was indistinguishable.

People are creatures of habit. If it looks like a trash can, then it must be a trash can.

While sitting in the San Diego airport Monday evening, I had the opportunity to watch people use this recycling trash bin. Unfortunately, they were not recycling. Instead, they were putting their drinks, plastic wrappers, food and other everyday trash in it.

The container is marked fairly well — cans, newspapers and bottles. Nowhere does it say trash.

Recycling has been around for a good 15 years. In the past few years, it has gained much more momentum. And while there are a number of people who choose not to recycle, I find it amazing that people don't notice the difference between a recycling trash bin and a trash can.

Trash Day as city living part

Why can't our City trash just give us cans like the recycle trash bins? We certainly pay enough in city and county taxes for the weekly chance to have our bins bouncing all over the street. This would save the trash truck lots of time too as they have the mechancial arm to pick-up, dump, drop all in one fell swoop!

Now, what about the trash cans? We have a metal can that we line each week with a plastic bag -- this keeps things nice and clean. When we put our can out on the curb, we tie off the bag so the trash man can simply lift the bag out of the can and toss the bag (and all our week's trash) into the big truck. Sounds simple, easy, neat -- doesn't it?

So here we are in what many say is a "second tier city" -- not one of the biggest cities but definitely not a town. Trash day is once a week, with recycling every other week. The recycling bins are great -- nice, big, hearty plastic trash bins on wheels that the truck just comes along and picks up and dumps and moves on. It's amazing to watch how quickly they can recycle two weeks worth of our recyclables (and the trash bin is ALWAYS full to the brim!).

Apparently, our trash man feels the need to fling our cans onto the street after it's empty .... with a plastic can, this is not too bad an idea as the cans are a bit flexible and they bounce rather than crunch.

But this is what happened yesterday when our trash man decided to fling our metal can:

You'd think a car or truck had hit our can -- but I can state for a fact that this was not done by a car or truck but by our trash man as I was home when the trash man cometh and this is how he left it!

student of the year once in trash bin

This is such a great success story not just for the little boy but for his family as well. He was basically described as being quite snotty and rude. But he was able to turn his life around on his own and become a great kid. Don't be upset even if you're in a trash bin now. You can make it a different!

A young boy of 11 was forced to grow up faster than anyone should. With his mother in jail and no relatives around him he lived on the streets. At one point he was sleeping in a trash bin to keep warm. He was involved with drugs and had to steal constantly to get food. When he moved in with his cousin and now legal guardian he had to go to school. He detested it and didn't find anything good. He was so used to living on his own with on rules that he had almost for got how to act with teachers and other authority figures. Once he was ready to buckle down he was kite smart. He is now named 'Student of the Year'.

the mistakes we have

This is the mistake denominational interpreters often have.  The Holy Spirit will not do it, not because he cannot, but because it is your job. The Holy Spirit cannot do the correcting, he cannot do the repenting for you. He can convict you through the Word; but the rectifying of the mistakes is your ball. Take your sin into the trash bin yourself!

This insight comes to me kind of slowly. As I read the posts I made in the PBCAA Blog, I noticed so many mistakes. I mean MY mistakes. But since I am not the moderator of that site, I cannot go to that post I made and do the necessary correction. It is not MY site. In MY Blogs, I could just revise, amend, correct the posts I had written, or consign it to the trash bin. This is the liberty of the one who creates it.

Misalarm

Scavengers sifting through a trash bin behind Gateway Shopping Center on Tuesday night made a gruesome find.

Decatur police told Seth Burkett the scavengers rushed to the police station to report discovering part of a human corpse.

Police searched the trash bin and found the torn-off limb lying in a puddle of red liquid. It turned out to be a mannequin?s arm in what appeared to be water tinged by the bins rusty bottom.

A trash bag mostly covered the other arm.

The mannequins head, torso and legs remained unaccounted for.

Teddy and the trash bin

Teddy shook his head, trying to tug the bag out of the trash bin.

Teddy groaned but did as he was told. He dragged his feet all the way to the trash bin though, merely out of principle. As he passed Harry, he glanced at him twice a startled look on his face.

“Why do you hate the man so much Harry?” Teddy asked instead. Harry blinked collecting his thoughts. Didn’t he know? Teddy wondered. Harry sighed.

“We didn’t get along very well when we were in school.” Harry smiled ruefully, “And mind you, this isn’t right, but we did our fair share of kicking each other back in school then. Take my advice Teddy it’s better to talk through misunderstandings and differences. You might save yourself a few enemies and gain a whole lot more friends.”

“Teddy why are your eyes grey?” Harry asked suspiciously.

“It’s cool looking.” Teddy informed him, wasn’t it obvious?

Harry blinked at him clearly uncomfortable, perhaps they reminded him too much of the man.

“Don’t you like your natural color” Harry asked clearly looking for a polite way to tell him to change it.

Teddy watched Harry dry the rest of the dishes with a flick of his wand. So the man had gone to school with Harry. They were enemies the way he and Jimmy were enemies, and they still were. Harry must have realized the hypocrisy of his statement because he shook his head a small smile forming.

“Yeah, I know I should take my own advice. As long as you’re up Teddy take this trash out will you?” Harry gestured to the very full kitchen trash bin.

Thinking Outside the Recycling Bin

I would love to hear other people's ideas for how to think outside of the recycling trash bin.

This is one of the reasons I've started trying to think outside of the recycling trash bin so that I'm not relying on my trash collection company only in taking away my recyclables. I realize that it's more important to reduce my use and reliance on certain items--you know, the old reduce, reuse, recycle--but if you've got stuff you no longer need, it's better to reuse or recycle it than to throw it away.

Taking boxes to the UPS Store. I just got finished writing a story for which I received a lot of product. And what did that product come in? Cardboard boxes. Since our trash company doesn't recycle cardboard, I'm loading up my car today with all of the leftover cardboard boxes and taking them to the UPS Store. I realize that I will not receive a financial benefit in doing this--such as a discount on a future shipping service, though that would be awfully nice--but it will make me feel better to know that these cardboard boxes will be reused instead of relegated to a landfill.

Bringing plastic bags back to the supermarket to be recycled. Not only can you place plastic grocery bags in the recycling trash bins you find outside of supermarkets but also dry cleaner bags and deflated plastic air pillows that are used in shipping.

Bagging up paper to drop off at my daughter's school. As I've blogged about before, my daughter's school participates in the Abitibi Paper Retriever program. This encourages local residents to recycle their paper by bringing it to the Abitibi "dumpsters" on the school's campus, and then the school earns money based on how much gets recycled each month. I'll be loading up bags of used magazines, newspapers and office papers, along with shredded paper from the shredder, to drop off today.

Have a trash can that looks good

It's hard to go wrong with stainless steel trash bin, but if you have kids, fingerprints can accumulate . Even adults are good at getting fingerprints on things. And who wants to spend time cleaning their trash bin?

You know not all of us have room for the dedicated slide-out trash/recycling kitchen cabinets. If you have to have a trash bin sitting out around the house, then you might as well have one that looks good.

Fortunately, this stainless steel trash can won't require wipe downs, since it features a fingerprint-proof finish. Go ahead, let the kids touch your open can all they like.

The cows recycling bins

The trash bins are printed in a noticeable, standout print for an urban area: the pattern of holstein cow spots. The three months following the introduction of the bins in Buenos Aires saw a 62% increase in aluminum can recycling. We can't help but love these and we're all for a public recycling program that gets public trash bins out on the streets.

Would people pay more attention to recycling if recycling trash bins were more noticeable? That's the concept set forth by Patricio Forrester's Feed the Cow recycling bins, which saw their start in Buenos Aires and are now seen in the U.K., too...

The Solar-powered trash bins

In places such as Chicago, where trash bins often overflow in fine weather when people flock to Lake Michigan, the bins are helping keep the beaches open. Birds often raid spilt trash and their droppings are a main cause of polluting bacteria on beaches.

Solar-powered trash bins sound an improbable invention and one is even crunching rubbish in rainy England.

On a recent holiday to southwest England, I gawped on hearing that the council in Torbay has started testing a U.S. “Big Belly” bin that uses a solar-driven motor to compact rubbish. The idea is that garbage trucks then have to drive round less often, saving work and cutting pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Residents are “very positive” and the trash bin is working as hoped. “The weather has made no difference,” according to Laura Balcombe at the council in Torbay, in a region that optimistically calls itself the “English Riviera”.

I got in touch with the manufacturer, Seahorse Power Co. near Boston, Mass., which has produced about 700-800 of the “Big Bellies” — now mashing trash in North America, Australia, the Middle East and in Europe.

“We are trying to use clean solar energy to displace truck trips. The garbage trucks are among the most inefficient trucks on the road,” said Bruce Todtfeld at Seahorse Power.

He reckons a trash bin, which has a solar panel on the top, can pay back its roughly $4,000 cost within 1-1/2 years in saved truck trips.

Todtfeld reckons the bins help raise awareness about the environment.

“People might have seen a solar panel on top of a house but haven’t had any contact with green technology. This is solving a problem they understand, right in front of them.”

the election speech

“Any history standards document that substitutes pillars such as the U.S. Constitution and The Magna Carta for air-headed multiculturalism diversity mush should be deposited in the nearest trash bin,” Leo said. “The draft is so awful that I call upon the commissioner to start completely over or face clear opposition from this member when the draft reaches the State Board of Education.”

One interesting question on the social studies standards is what will prove more controversial – what’s in the standards or what’s not. The absence trash bin of significant coverage of economics, The Federalist, the Founding Fathers, Abraham Lincoln, or the Magna Carta will certainly attract opposition.

the recycling program

Part of the landscape since the city began, the alleys, mostly home to garbage bins and garages, make for cleaner and less congested main streets. But Chicago’s distinction is not without disadvantages: Imagine having a duplicate set of streets, in miniature, to maintain that are prone to flooding and to dumping runoff into a strained sewer system.

Judy King, putting all her household refuse into one bag on Tuesday and tossing it into a trash bin in a green alley, said: “How do you decide where your priorities are? It’s a hard one. I’m bothered that there isn’t more recycling.”

The city has lately begun having serious talks about a comprehensive recycling program to replace the uneven guidelines now in place. But beyond recycling, it has a vast array of “green initiatives” that put it at the forefront of environmentally conscious cities with many more trash bins.

funny thought these days

Here’s something random. I had a dream the other night with all my high school friends in it. Not college friends, which is rather unusual. Janyne was our guide, but we were all taking the train to go to Disney World. We got off at one station stop and my daddy and someone else had built a swing set, just for me. I was very happy, but was almost late getting back on the train. So anyway, analyze that! Ha.

The construction guys near the university got smart and put the trash bin under the trash chute instead of making a pile and then shoveling it into the trash bin. It’s been very amusing watching them.

Here’s something interesting. Maybe my mom’s the only one who did this, but I bet not. When I was younger, if I ever said I was bored she would always think that I could do more housework to entertain myself. Well today, when I told Janyne that I’ve been bored lately, she automatically started talking about getting Matt and I more homework from our language teacher. I’m dead serious. Both as a kid and presently I was lamenting the lack of social activities and these women somehow think I’m lacking in domestic or academic activities. Are you kidding me? I don’t think so! Yes, my studies are very light right now, but I don’t want more just because it’s something to do.

The trash bin making day

The trash bin making...it gave mixed emotions to the students some became hot-tempered and some are starting to become crazy(laughing without any reason) but maybe laughing without any reason is the only way the student thought for them not to be irritated at that time. After the activity I'm fulfilled because I was able to help in making the trash bin succesful. By the way, the judgement of our trash bin will be on Monday I hope our trash bin will get a perfect score and we will win the competition of the most beautiful trash bins.

Friday we made our trash bin in our school. It is a class quiz for Biology so all of us were busy yesterday. For my own point of view its very chaotic! Haha but its true there is no unity in our section at that time but as time goes by all of us understand each other and continued to work on the trash bin. During the dismissal(3:00 p.m.) the other group started to construct the interior of the trash bin. 5:30 p.m. we moved to Ivana's house to continue designing the bin but I only stayed there for about an hour because I was not able to tell to my mom about this activity. It was fun and challenging. It was challenging because it tested our skills and resourcefulness because the black cartolinas were not available and we looked for another black material for us to pursue our plan for the bin.
